South Korea’s Lee in Tokyo to Highlight Friendly Ties with Japan Ahead of Key Trump Summit
Tokyo, August 23:
South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon arrived in Tokyo on Friday to strengthen diplomatic engagement with Japan, just days before a crucial trilateral summit with former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Lee’s visit comes amid renewed efforts by Seoul and Tokyo to repair historically strained relations over wartime issues and trade disputes. Officials said the discussions will focus on regional security, economic cooperation, and joint strategies to deal with North Korea.
During his trip, Lee is expected to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, where both sides are likely to emphasize the importance of mutual trust and collaboration. Analysts say the visit is aimed at presenting a united front with Washington, especially as Trump pushes for closer trilateral security cooperation in East Asia.
The summit with Trump, scheduled for early next week, is seen as a test of how well South Korea and Japan can set aside differences and work together on shared challenges, including North Korea’s nuclear program and growing regional tensions.
