Rajnath Singh Responds to Opposition: Downed Jets, Trump’s Role & Ceasefire Explained

On Monday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh opened the debate in the Lok Sabha regarding the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent Operation Sindoor. Criticizing the Opposition for not asking the “right questions,” Singh laid out the government’s stance and strategic response to the incident.

The minister addressed three major points that have dominated Opposition discourse in recent weeks:

1. On the Downed Fighter Jets
   The Opposition questioned how Indian air assets were compromised during the operation. Rajnath Singh responded that such risks are inherent in high-stakes counter-terror operations, and the sacrifices made by the armed forces underscore their bravery. He added that operational details have been thoroughly reviewed and any lapses will be addressed through internal mechanisms.
2. On the Government’s Response Timeline
   Opposition leaders raised concerns about the speed and transparency of the government’s response following the Pahalgam attack. Singh clarified that Operation Sindoor was launched within hours of the attack and involved coordinated efforts across the Army, intelligence agencies, and local police. He emphasized that the government prioritizes both speed and precision in national security operations.

3. On Donald Trump’s Alleged Role in Ceasefire Mediation
   Some Opposition members referenced international media reports suggesting that former U.S. President Donald Trump may have played a backchannel role in mediating a ceasefire in the region. Rajnath Singh dismissed these claims as speculative and baseless, asserting that all diplomatic and strategic decisions regarding national security are sovereign and taken independently by India.

   Singh concluded by urging the Opposition to adopt a bipartisan approach on matters of national security and not politicize sensitive defence operations.
