Gambhir's message to players after crushing win vs Pakistan: Meet the umpires at least

After India's Super 4 win over Pakistan, coach Gautam Gambhir asked players to shake hands with the umpires. Abhishek Sharma starred with 74 off 39 balls, while India's openers dominated the chase to secure a six-wicket victory in Dubai.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir asked his players to shake hands with the match officials after their commanding Super 4 win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 on Sunday, 22 September.

In India’s previous encounter with Pakistan, the team had skipped customary handshakes at the toss and after the game. Captain Suryakumar Yadav had explained this was done to show solidarity to the victims affected in the recent terror attacks in Pahalgam and to show their support to the Indian armed forces for their successful execution of Operation Sindoor.

On the field, India’s opening pair dominated the chase. Abhishek Sharma scored a brilliant 74 off 39 balls, hitting six boundaries and five sixes. Shubman Gill supported him with 47 off 28 balls, and together they shared a 105-run partnership that set the tone for India’s successful chase of 172. The team reached 100 in just 8.4 overs.

After the two openers departed and Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed for a duck, Tilak Varma remained unbeaten on 30 and Hardik Pandya scored 7 not out to guide India to a six-wicket win. Earlier, Shivam Dube made important breakthroughs with the ball, dismissing Sahibzada Farhan (58) and Saim Ayub (21) to break a 72-run second-wicket partnership that had threatened India’s bowling plans.

This was India’s second convincing win over Pakistan in the tournament, having beaten them by seven wickets in the group stage as well. While tensions on the field remained high, Gambhir’s instruction to meet the umpires reflected his focus on discipline and professionalism, reminding players that respect for the officials is part of the game.
